Former police officer Marcos Vinicius Borges Emmanuel was sentenced to 309 years in prison for his role in the beatings and murders of homeless youths in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The killings, allegedly arranged by local business owners, caused an international outcry by human-rights activists.
