Omnicom Group to buy stake in a medical-testing company
Article Abstract:
Omnicom Group is expected to announce a $20-million purchase of a minority stake in clinical-trials company Scirex. A similar move was made this month by Lowe Group, which bought International Pharmaceutical Research, another clinical-trials firm. The goal is to work with pharmaceutical firms from the outset as they weigh how to market their drugs. Since the FDA loosened regulations on the advertising of prescription drugs, pharmaceutical firms have begun aiming their marketing at consumers as well as at physicians. Pharmaceutical firms are keen to trim development costs, hold more focused trials and channel new drugs into the most lucrative markets as quickly as possible. In the past, drug companies have focused on the clinical trials rather than on the marketing subsequent to a drug's approval. The emphasis on the marketing aspect of the process will increase as a result of deals such as that made by Omnicom Group.
