With the merging of television and telephone technologies enhanced by large scale integrated circuits and increased use of digital signals, electronic equipment will become a more important factor in the retail industry, according to Mr. Lloyd Atkinson, group manager, video products, Philips Industries Holdings Ltd. in a speech to the Australian Video Association of Sidney. Video recorders and tapes are popular instruments in the management and training fields and are expected to become cheaper. By the 1990's customers will be able to make retail transactions and access services electronically if they choose.

Numbers Grow but Many Still Don't Own a Computer

Australia has a 3.7 billion dollar information processing industry. In 1982 the hardware market grew by twenty per cent, custom software by thirty-four per cent and packaged software by thirty- two per cent. Mr. Len Rust, managing director of International Data Corp. (IDC) Australia, says IDC forecasts 384 million dollars in revenue for top-rated IBM for 1982-83. The largest growth in installations is in the finance and insurance industries. Two tables are shown-one on the statistics of computers installed in Australian companies, the other on comparison of methods of processing.
