Oracle, Sun open a new line of attack on Microsoft with licensing agreement
Article Abstract:
Oracle and Sun Microsystems agreed to a software bundling deal in another move to counter mutual rival Microsoft. Insiders said Oracle will integrate its leading database software with Sun's Solaris OS. The new packaging alliance between the strong partners could allow manufactures to develop their own computers designed to operate databases. Oracle and Sun also are planning to challenge a shift toward less expensive servers that rely on Microsoft's Windows NT and Microsoft's SQL Server database program. A new trend calls for offering single-function computers that do not need to interoperate with Windows NT or other versatile OSes. Both companies declined to disclose specifics on the arrangement, but they have scheduled a press conference for today that will feature Oracle Chmn Lawrence Ellison and Sun CEO Scott McNealy.
