Article Abstract:
Private Automatic Branch Exchanges (PABX) have evolved from electrical systems to stored-program computerized systems. These third generation PABX systems can monitor use and provide optimum route selection. Fourth generation microprocessor controlled PABXs will permit digitized voice and data transmission. These technological advances allow the communication of information to be planned to meet the organizational needs and objectives. Telecom, PABX suppliers, and user associations all help plan for system upgrading, including protocols and code conversions. In Australia, telecommunications facilities must meet regulations. Plans for PABX systems should include upgrading capability, management control, user friendly functions, and monitoring for cost-effectiveness. A chart comparing the features of models from eight companies is shown.

Watch Your Phone Bill When You Install an Easier PABX
Article Abstract:
To obtain the greatest benefit from the cost of installing a communications network, management must be involved in the planning. Increased traffic, generated by a new system, should be included in the cost estimation. Major growth in communications is predicted to occur in corporation networks. These are some of the observations delivered at a seminar sponsored by Management Technology Educational Pty Ltd. An explanation of the classifications of local area networks, such as token passing, is included. Users are advised to utilize PABX when possible.

Equipment at Work: PABX Links Airline Interstate Offices
Article Abstract:
Trans-Australia Airlines has updated the telephone system at its Melbourne facility with three integrated PABX systems, each with 2400 extension circuits and running on a Siemens EMS 12000 microprocessor. The main PABX, which takes most incoming calls, has a switchboard with operator to direct calls. The three PABX units have independent hardware and software for processing direct extension calls, but are integrated for emergency back-up. Several special features including automatic redialing are part of the new system.
