Peace plan set; ruling council seated

Liberia negotiated an end to its civil war in Aug 1995, and in Sep 1995 the agreed-upon six-member ruling council was sworn into office. The civil war began in Dec 1989 when Liberia was invaded by an army from the Ivory Coast. Elections are expected to be held in Aug 1996.

A cease-fire was obtained in the seven-year-long civil war in Liberia after fighting became fierce in Monrovia, the country's capital. The Apr 18, 1996, cease-fire was orchestrated by US intervention between the warring factions. Details about the fighting are given.

Fighting broke out in Monrovia, Liberia, on Apr 6, 1996, after factional leader D Roosevelt Johnson was arrested on murder charges. The US staged an airlift to remove the 470 Americans living in Liberia, and 15,000-20,000 Liberians took shelter at the US embassy.
