Personal technology: online drugstores offer some remedies and a few headaches
Article Abstract:
Some consumers may find ordering drugstore items from online services such as PlanetRx and Drugstore.com more convenient than a trip to the local store. Both these sellers' sites are well organized, allowing users to create lists of frequently purchased items. By way of comparison, 3 items bought at the local CVS drugstore cost $18.10. The same purchase, without shipping charges, from Drugstore.com was $15.88; PlanetRx, $15.23. Overnight shipping for Drugstore.com is $17.95, weekdays only. PlanetRx is $10.95, weekends $10.00 extra. Standard shipping is $1 for Drugstore.com; free for orders over $20.00 from PlanetRx. For either site, filling prescriptions can involve mailing a copy of the doctor's order, and neither is yet tied into insurance providers.

Personal technology: Now, you can police your kids' desktop, but in a nice way
Article Abstract:
Edmark Corp. (Seattle, WA) will release KidDesk Internet Safe, a $29 program that allows parents to control their children's computer access. Running only on Windows 95 or Windows 98, the software lets parents set up a desktop on the family PC that launches only the specific programs and Web pages that the children are allowed to see. The children never see the normal Windows desktop and cannot use ordinary Windows features. KidDesk automatically disables unauthorized Web links and bans the use of e-mail or chat rooms.

Personal technology: using a PC got harder in 1999, but a new age is about to dawn
Article Abstract:
Windows-based home computers, loaded with applications running in the background, seem ever more crash prone. Hardware and software makers are developing so-called information appliances, designed primarily for Web and e-mail. MS Web TV, Cidco Mailstation, AOL TV, and MS Web Companions are the names of some the products. They promise to be more stable, easier to use computers.
