Price-fixing trial begins for 3 ex-Archer officials
Article Abstract:
The price-fixing trial of 3 former Archer Daniels Midland Co. executives began with opening arguments by defense and government lawyers. The government contends that the executives were part of a conspiracy between Archer Daniels and rival companies, whose conversations were secretly recorded by the FBI, to set market prices and allocate production volumes for the popular feed additive lysine. The defense contends that their clients actually had been trying to battle with the illegal Asian cartel.

Bill to limit prosecution of hospitals loses support
Article Abstract:
A bill that would make it more difficult for hospitals to be sued in compliance with a Federal fraud statute no longer has enough votes for passage in the US Congress. Up until now, it appeared that the bill was almost a sure bet to be passed by the Congress. However, the bill lost support when the Justice Department established new guidelines that made it mandatory to show greater caution in utilizing the fraud statute against health care providers.
