South African communist leader Hani assassinated
Article Abstract:
South African Communist Party Sec Gen Chris Hani was assassinated Apr 10, 1993, by Polish immigrant Janusz Walus. Walus belonged to the far-right Afrikaner Weerstandbeweging. Hani was an important member of the African National Congress and key player in the transition to black majority rule.

Human-rights petitions released
Article Abstract:
Chinese dissidents sent two letters on Feb 27, 1995, demanding greater democratic freedoms and probes into human rights abuses. The letters were sent to the 'People's Daily' and the National People's Congress. Prominent signers of the documents include Wang Dan and He Xintong.
