Social Democrat Rasmussen announced his newly formed, four-party coalition government to Queen Margrethe II on Jan 25, 1993. Rasmussen follows Poul Schluter, who resigned Jan 14, 1993, after the release of a report criticizing his participation in an asylum scandal.

Peace talks between the government and the rebel faction broke off without any significant progress being made, though the two sides agreed to resume the talks May 12, 1995. It was hoped the talks could end the rebel insurgency that began Jan 1, 1994.

Democrat wins Oregon Senate seat
Article Abstract:
Wyden defeated his Republican opponent Gordon Smith on Jan 30, 1996, by a slim margin of 47.6% to 46.1%. The special election was held to replace Bob Packwood, who resigned in Oct 1995. Wyden becomes the first Democrat Senator from Oregon since 1962.
