Quality problems, policies, and attitudes in the United States and Japan: an exploratory study
Article Abstract:
Shop floor supervisors in Japanese and U.S. manufacturing companies were studied to compare quality control practices and policies in the two countries. The relationship between company commitment to quality and actual performance, and the change in objectives as quality improves were the focal points of the study. Japan's improvements in product quality have been linked to a combination of statistical process control techniques, worker participation in decision making, and a production management style that stresses cooperation. While there is a strong relationship between commitment to quality and quality performance, quality improvement is unlikely unless Japanese production techniques are adapted to local conditions, and unless both management and workers share the commitment to quality improvement.
