The Supreme Court, in Allied-Signal Inc versus Director, New Jersey Division of Taxation, limited states' ability to tax out-of state companies. The Court held that states could not tax the revenues from the sale of stock in separate companies.

The Supreme Court, in US versus Fordice, held that Mississippi had not eliminated segregation within its university system. Formerly white colleges still were enrolling up to 91% of whites as of 1986.
