Ruling party wins boycotted elections
Article Abstract:
The ruling Bangladesh National Party won 205 out of 207 contested legislative seats in an election held Feb 15, 1996. However, the three major opposition parties boycotted the election and called for the resignation of Prime Minister Khalida Zia. The election was marked by fraud and violence.

Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council announced that preliminary results from the June 25, 1995, elections showed the Lavalas party winning most races. However, there were widespread reports of electoral fraud. Manno Charlemagne defeated Evans Paul in Port-au-Prince's mayoral race.

East German former leader convicted

Hans Modrow was convicted of fraud connected with the May 1989 elections in Dresden, Germany. Wolfgang Vogel was charged with tax evasion and extortion from political prisoners between 1964 and 1989. The trial of spy chief Wolf began on May 4, 1993.
