Russia: Chechnya rebel leader reported slain

Chechen rebels confirmed on Apr 1996 that President Dzhokhar M. Dudayev was killed in a Russian rocket attack 3 days earlier. Dudayev had led the Chechen independence movement since his 1991 election. The rocket attack violated a cease fire declared by Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin.

Coup try crushed, rebel leader slain
Article Abstract:
Deputy Interior Minister Javadov, leader of a rebel police unit, was killed by Azerbaijan government forces on Mar 17, 1995. The rebel group's failed coup attempt against Pres Geidar Aliyev began on Mar 13, 1995. The coup attempt worried foreign investors.
