Sailor sentenced to life for gay's murder

Airman Apprentice Helvey pleaded guilty to the murder of Navy shipmate Schindler, a homosexual, on May 3, 1993, and was sentenced to life in prison on May 27, 1993. The prosecutor said that the motive was 'general hostility' rather than a hatred of gays.

Retrial set for environmentalist's slayer

A Brazilian appeals court in Acre held that there was not enough evidence to convict Darly Alves da Silva of planning to murder Francisco Mendes Filho in 1988. Alves da Silva's son was convicted of the murder in 1990. The case is being appealed.

Vandal cleared in stabbing death

Jury members acquitted 19-year-old Joseph Elliot of the stabbing death of Bob Osborne because they believed he acted in self defense. Elliot, who had slashed some car tires, killed Osborne after Osborne confronted him with a hammer.
