Senate votes against public hearings on Packwood

The Senate defeated a measure introduced by five female legislators that would have required public hearings on the charges against Sen Packwood. The Senate Ethics Committee has been investigating allegations that Packwood sexually harassed women on 18 different occasions from 1969-90.

Senate panel cites Packwood for sexual misconduct

The Senate Select Committee on Ethics said on May 17, 1995, that it found sufficient evidence to accuse Sen Packwood of sexual harassment, obstruction of justice and influence peddling. Packwood's position as Senate Finance Committee chairman could be taken away if he is found guilty.

Packwood announced on Sep 8, 1995, that he would resign effective Oct 1, 1995. The Senate Ethics committee found evidence that Packwood had engaged in sexual harassment, influence peddling and other charges. Several candidates plan to run for Packwood's vacated seat.
