'Sledgehammer' cry over sins of a DIY few

Do-it-yourself (DIY) funds, the preferred savings method of 380,000 Australian baby boomers, is coming under attack from legal and other fronts. The Australian Parliament will introduce two bills to tighten the funds regulatory regime under the Australian Tax Office. Also, tax surcharges/rates and age-based contribution limits are affecting DIY funds. DIY funds grew by 23%, or $9.3 billion, during the 12 months to March 1999, reaching $50 billion.

A new tax ruling on charter yachts and its implications are discussed. The Australian Taxation Office prepared examples of acceptable charter boat arrangements between charter companies and owners, in order to gain business exemption, in conjunction with the charter industry.
