Some evidence on the nature of relearning curves
Article Abstract:
The nature of relearning curves is examined in terms of its best-fitting forms in relation to learning curves, the usefulness of backing up these learning curves, and the relation between skill decrement and goodness-of-fit of relearning curves. Two sets of marginal-time learning curves were fitted to data on the performance of lab subjects who were asked to assemble Erector Sets on a realistic-wage basis. Analysis of lab data shows that nonlinear relearning curves of both the log-log form and the arithmetic scale give the best fit. A good fit was also obtained for relearning curves that were backed up against the best-fitting learning curves or when beginning with new curves of a similar form. A proportional relationship was found to exist between the disparity of goodness-of-fit of different models of relearning curves and the extent of skill decrement.

An examination of customer racial discrimination in the market for baseball memorabilia
Article Abstract:
Customer racial discrimination in the market for baseball memorabilia is examined. The study investigated the various factors that may dictate the market price of rookie baseball cards, including expected future performance and the players' ethnicity. For the study, data on the prices of rookie cards for pitchers and hitters entering the majors between 1984 and 1990 are collected. Results show that race does not determine the price of the baseball cards. However, statistical analyses cannot be used to conclude that there is no customer prejudice at all. Nevertheless, the present analysis shows that there is no evidence that discrimination leads to lower prices for black or Hispanic baseball players. Implications are discussed.
