Southern Co. unit to purchase plants for $1.28 billion

Southern Co. will purchase plants from Pacific Gas & Electric based in California and from two firms in New York for a total of $1.28 billion. The holding company's Southern Energy Inc. will acquire 13 plants in the San Francisco Bay area for $801 million and 16 more plants from Orange & Rockland Utilities Inc. and Consolidated Edison Inc. for $480 million. Southern Energy plans to spend more money to upgrade the electric generating plants in the purchase that is expected to be final in the second quarter of 1999.

AES is planning to buy Cilcorp for $885 million

AES Corp., an independent power producer based in Arlington, VA, but with global holdings, will purchase Cilcorp, a Peoria, Ill. energy services firm servicing Central Illinois customers numbering 250,000. The deal, valued at $885 million, is expected to be completed in mid-1999 after all necessary approvals.
