Southwest puts New York on map
Article Abstract:
Southwest Airlines might be making travel plans. It is speculated that if and when the company enters the New York City area with flights that go to Islip on Long Island, the fares will be very affordable and will contribute greatly to competitive pricing from other carriers. New York, the world's largest destination market, saw nearly 84 million travelers arrive in l997. Islip, however, would not be as convenient to Manhattan as LaGuardia, Newark Int'l or JFK Int'l airports. Receipt of new planes from Boeing and completion of renovations at the Islip airport could affect timing of Southwest's plans and announcements.

AMR, challenging UAL in west, to buy Reno Air
Article Abstract:
In a $124 million purchase of Reno Air, American Airlines plans to add all those Western customers to its global network. It also gives American 27 more planes and almost 300 pilots, and a competitive edge against United in the West. Reno has been in a marketing partnership with American since the mid-90's that has helped American keep a West Coast presence, but this acquisition will give Reno Air a boost out of the red and into the black again.
