Spanish phone utility extends its Latin American leadership
Article Abstract:
Telefonica's late Jul 1998 investment in Brazilian telecommunications carrier Telebras cements its dominance in the Latin American market, according to Telefonica Chmn Juan Villalonga. The Spanish carrier purchased one third of Telebras in the Brazilian Government's $19 billion auction for its former state monopoly. Financial terms call for Telefonica to spend $5 billion for controlling phone service in the Sao Paulo region, as well as $1.2 billion for wireless carrier service in the Rio de Janeiro and Espiritu Santo regions. Telefonica, having doubled its Latin American holdings to more than $10 billion with the purchase, is seeking to extend its international presence from Latin America to the remainder of Europe and the US. Growth has been steady since 1994 for Madrid-based Telefonica, which became fully privatized in 1997. Profits reached $1.2 billion in on revenue of $15.5 billion in 1997, representing an 18% boost from 1996.

Whiz kids are given a chance to teach their stuff
Article Abstract:
The U S West Foundation's new Technology Academy has established several new programs for children to teach computer and Internet usage skills to adults. These savvy users are sharing their knowledge of computer maintenance, troubleshooting and one-on-one skills with fellow students, teachers and even school principals. The U S West Technology Academy in Jan, Feb and Mar 1998 trained 70 teams representing low-income, rural and minority populations from the 14 states that U S West serves. Each community group received a computer server, four desktops and $15,000 to organize the instruction. Classes covered arranging and maintaining a computer network and doing Internet research, Web publishing, peer coaching and marketing. The U S West Foundation said teams consisted of two adults and two students, ideally 13 or older.
