Start-up offers new power route for artificial heart
Article Abstract:
World Heart Corp. offers a new power route for artificial hearts. The Canadian start-up expects to earn US$13 million in its first year of sales in the year 2001. World Heart's product, the HeartSaver, is gaining attention, because of the way it is powered and its compact size. Instead of using an external power source that uses wires, the left-ventricular-assist device is powered by a system that uses electromagnetism. A small battery is taped to the chest, and energy is transmitted through the skin to an adjacent coil implanted in the body.

FDA clears Chiron's hepatitis C virus test that is more accurate
Article Abstract:
Considered more sensitive and consequently more reliable, a new blood test from Chiron Corp. of Emeryville, Calif., verifies that a liver transplant is likely needed. New Jersey-based Ortho Diagnostic Systems Inc. will distribute the product, RIBA HCV 3.0 Strip Immunoblot Assay, to medical facilities. The new test will preclude the need to notify thousands of people who are not at risk of getting hepatitis C.
