Steel strike avoided

Members of the German steel industry and representatives of the steel union IG Metall reached a contract agreement Feb 3, 1992, avoiding what would have been the first major strike since reunification. The union won a 6.35% pay raise, higher than the 5-6% ceiling set by the government.

German public-sector strike ends with 5.4% raise

Public employees in Germany accepted an average pay increase of 5.4% and ended a nationwide strike on May 7, 1992. However, members of the leading union, OTV, rejected the agreement. The strike had affected public transportation, postal service and garbage service.
