The trends in financial services companies of New Zealand and Australia are discussed. Many banks in these countries are resorting to restructuring their operations. Banks are now grappling with a situation wherein they have lent to home loan borrowers at low interest rates during housing boom but are now facing higher rate of borrowings in view of rising interest rates.

Commonwealth-Colonial, now for the hard part

The Commonwealth Bank paid some $9.6 billion to acquire the Colonial State Bank. The management must now ensure the two banks are fully unified to retain customers although 250 Colonial branches will have to be closed.
