Sun to unveil Hot Java and Sunscreen to make Internet zippier, more secure
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems Inc introduces the Hot Java World Wide Web (WWW) home page development and access software and the Sunscreen Internet-based communications system. Sun benefits from any product that helps promote the Internet because of its 56% market share of Internet access servers. The new Hot Java product allows WWW home page developers to include 3D and moving images, a big improvement over current home pages that are static and boring. The software, using Sun's new Java programming language, delivers streams of data packets called applets that produce a continuous moving picture. Users can obtain the Hot Java software for free by downloading it from the Internet. Sunscreen combines the SPF-100 server and new data security software to provide secure inter-company networks that piggyback on the Internet. The product, which sells for about $25,000, allows companies to save money by eliminating the need for expensive leased phone lines.

First IBM computer with PowerPC chip is launched in drive to challenge Intel
Article Abstract:
IBM introduces the first workstation that is equipped with the PowerPC microprocessor that has been jointly developed by IBM, Motorola and Apple. The PowerPC chip is intended as a rival product to semiconductor giant Intel's Pentium processor. IBM plans to release a wide range of systems based on the PowerPC platform, from low-priced models to more powerful mainframes. The PowerPC is being sold at about half the price of the Pentium chip, but the challenge remains a risky one, considering that over 150 million of the computers being used globally are based on the Intel platform and they run applications that are tailored specifically for the Intel platform. IBM must convince applications developers to make products that capitalize on PowerPC's powerful features.
