Supplementary pension coverage in Britain
Article Abstract:
Cross-sectional data from the Family Resources Survey in the UK in 1993-94 were used to analyze the patterns of supplementary pension coverage of employees after the implementation of the 1986 Social Security Act. Two-thirds of employees were found to be covered by private contracted-out pension schemes. Employer-provided defined benefit pension plans remained the dominant type of supplementary pension scheme. It is concluded that adverse labor market conditions will exert downward pressure on private pension coverage in the absence of further pension reform.

Transfers in Spanish state retirement pensions
Article Abstract:
The redistributive effects of the social security retirement pensions in Spain was calculated by comparing the monthly amount of pension effectively received and the amount that would correspond to an actuarial equilibrium between contributions and benefits. The calculations show that the Spanish social security system is paying out pensions that significantly exceed the amount that is actuarially fair. This makes Spain's pension system more of a mechanism for the redistribution of income than an income insurance.

Income support and staying in school: what can we learn from Australia's AUSTUDY experiment?
Article Abstract:
The impact of the Australian income support plan, called AUSTUDY, is determined. AUSTUDY supports full-time college and high school students who are in their last two years of education. The program is found to positively affect the school retention rates of financially disadvantaged children since its implementation in 1987. Over the period 1989-1993, the retention rates in the target sector increased by 3.5% to 4%.
