Taiwan president visits U.S.

Lee made an unofficial visit to the US from Jun 7-10, 1995. In a speech at his alma matter Cornell University, Lee said he would consider meeting with Chinese Pres Jiang Zemin. China had vigorously protested Lee's visit. Lee met with three US Congressmen, but no members of the Clinton administration.

Winston Lord told China that the US is planning to base its trade policy on the improvements that China makes in its human-rights situation. Pres Bill Clinton was considering restricting trade until China corrected its human-rights abuses.
