The Australian taxation office (ATO) completed more than 66,500 field audits and 21,000 phone checks, many of which were related to GST compliance issues and the cash economy in the year 2002-03. Due to the introduction of GST and the business activity statement (BAS), the ATO has access to wealth of information about the sales cycles and expense patterns of entire industry.
