Australia and the US cannot expect to remain immune to the economic disasters suffered in Asian markets such as Hong Kong. After rising more than 450% since 1990, Hong Kong shares and property have lost about half their value, and further decline is predicted. Factors affecting Hong Kong's economy include China's support for non-productive bank loans.

Veteran US economist Dr. Al Wojnilower predicts that the US stockmarket will fall drastically in 1999 or 2001.
