The Application of Industrial Robots in the Soviet Engineering Industry
Article Abstract:
Soviet interest in developing robotics had its roots in space research, but is fueled by competitiveness with America and the opportunity to increase productivity by mechanizing many manual, unskilled labor operations. Two phases are identified and discussed: (1) expanded robot development and production and (2) the problematic period caused by over-expectation and unskilled labor to maintain the robots. Problems included single robots rather than an integrated systems approach and psychological barriers of both management and shop floor workers. An awareness is growing that robotization is not a simple solution to labor scarcity. More emphasis is being put on flexible manufacturing systems (FMS).
