The Force Is with Them
Article Abstract:
Defense electronics is a rapidly growing industry in the United States. Many of the companies are primarily employed by the United States Department of Defense. With the Reagan Administration planning to increase the Defense budget electronic defense companies are expected to prosper. Key to the recent attention those companies are receiving is the interest by the government in building a space-based satellite system as an ultimate military weapon. Costs for such a system and the research necessary to build it is expected to be enormous. Wall Street is cautiously optimistic about the firms participating in this project, chief among them E- Systems. This company excels in the area of command, control and communications and electronic warfare. The company has grown by more than sixty per cent a year, compounded, for several years. Defense electronics has generally grown by fifteen per cent a year.

New Havens for Corporate Cash
Article Abstract:
Adjustable rate preferred (ARPs) are a new type of mutual fund. Companies have seized on them as a way to get almost money market rates of return on their cash plus the maximum eighty-five per cent corporate tax exemption on dividend income. The marriage of adjustable rates and the preferred issues has put the ARP funds somewhere between equity mutual funds and money market mutual funds but adjustable rate preferred are not risk free. The more cautious corporate treasurers may need more time before they test the idea with the company's money.
