The Inc. 100
Article Abstract:
1984 offers some unusual events in the listing of the fastest growing small public companies. Most of them are relative newcomers, and as a group they are the youngest, smallest and most productive list compiled. They share with other groups, however, the risk-taking spirit which contributes to success. The five year growth rate in sales for the group is a phenominal 2,030 percent. The companies included on the list encompass a wide range of fields in manufacturing service and energy-related industries. The companies on the 1984 list are generally smaller than in the past and almost half have expanded through acquisitions. They spend a large amount of money on research and development, yet many of the group are still unprofitible. The companies included on the list have generated more new jobs than any other group. An alphabetical listing, plus other specific breakdowns of the listing are included.

Although most of the companies which made the book are small and innovative, there were some big established companies (such as IBM and Exxon) included. The corporations are rated on a one to five star system which covers such areas as pay, benefits, job security, the chance to move up, and ambiance.
