Article Abstract:
The history of America's religious freedom is described, with emphasis on the critical role played by James Madison. The author readily acknowledges his liberal Catholic perspective, but does not address its relation to the beliefs of conservative Catholics and Protestants, for whom the notion of sin brings freedom into question.
