The Passion of Robert Swiggert
Article Abstract:
Kollmorgen is a company which is different from many. It replaces the traditional hostile relationship between management and employee with a relationship that is based on freedom and respect for the workers. Robert L. Swiggert, Kollmorgen's chief executive and chairman, developed this attitude that respect is a greater motivator than contempt after noticing that his organization lacked some unifying sense of design and purpose, and that this lack was hurting the company. When business survival forced the establishment of a small, self contained, self reliant production unit within the larger company, the nucleus for Swiggert's business philosophy was born. The eight divisions all operate as self contained, autonomous profit centers, who have their own board of directors. Rule books and time clocks were thrown out, and replaced with openness and trust. Students of corporate America might view Kollmorgen as an inspiration, or the answer to a dream. Swiggert wants his employees to feel as if they are part of a family, and to feel as secure and safe in their jobs as they do in their homes. He has discovered that this kind of relationship with his employees is all the motivation they need.
