The Year of the Fast Growth Bear
Article Abstract:
To see how the fastest growing one hundred companies did on the stock market, 'Inc.' performed a hypothetical test. One hundred dollars worth of stock was tracked from March 16, 1983 to March 15, 1984. The overall performance of the group of stocks was poor - down sixteen percent in a year - which indicated that rapid company growth does not insure a good performance on the stock market. Many companies on the list were initial public offerings (IPO), and many of these IPO's did not maintain their initial price through the year. The troubles of the larger companies did not help the prices of the fast growth companies either. Most of these companies should, however, improve their performance, giving investors something to look at.
