Article Abstract:
Employee stock ownership plans are a useful method for corporations to provide employees with a sense of belonging, but the Australian House of Representatives and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) are investigating aggressive tax planners that may be using the plans as a tax dodge. Private companies, which do not have the intense regulatory scrutiny that public companies do, have greater potential for manipulation. The Australian Council of Trade Unions supports employee share schemes, provided they meet eligibility, equity, and union involvement criteria.
