Article Abstract:

Very-high-speed-backbone network service (vBNS) is an experimental network, launched in Apr 1995 that was designed for private use and created in a joint effort by the National Science Foundation and MCI. The vBNS network is used by researchers who found the Internet to be too slow and crowded be of much use to them. Referred to a 'Internet 1' by MCI engineers, vBNS's high performance stems from high backbone speeds and limited number of users. The vBNS network is viewed by many companies as a testing lab for technology that they will be able to sell in the public sector. Much of the technology being used by vBNS has already been implemented into networks on the Internet. Research on the universe and x-rays is being done with vBNS and videoconference is also advancing.
