The impact of outliers and leverage points for technical efficiency measurement using high breakdown procedures
Article Abstract:
The accuracy of computed technical efficiency measures need to be established because they are used by management to plan strategies to achieve performance improvements in the future. Unfortunately, most data used for production studies can be messy because they have not been collected for such purposes. Since the data's messiness can affect the accuracy of efficiency measures, it is important to separate the contaminated from uncommon but valid observations in the data set. To achieve this, a study is conducted that uses high breakdown procedures and a robust distance measure to statistically and graphically describe multivariate outliers and leverage points for three linerboard manufacturing facilities. The results are discussed.

The key to understanding the forecasting process
Article Abstract:
Most companies apparently do not realize the full valueof forecasting. The typical forecasting process in many Fortune 500 firms relegates the forecasting system into a supporting function, when it can serve as the central integrative process from which finance, marketing, sales, logistics and senior management can direct and coordinate their efforts. A planfor successful forecasting which companies can adopt so they can gain a competitive advantage is described.

Understanding and using the power of outliers in statistical modeling
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the role of outliers in statistical modeling are discussed. Definitions and types of outliers are examined. Their influence on statistical modeling processes are considered and it is recommended that influential observations should not be ignored in statistics.
