The impact of perceived environmental uncertainty and perceived agent effectiveness on the composition of compensation contracts
Article Abstract:
The effects of perceptions of both environmental uncertainty and agent effectiveness on the make-up of compensation plans is examined. A laboratory experiment, wherein the conditions arising from theoretical assumptions are imposed and relaxed, is presented that considers the problem of compensation for middle management in the insurance industry. The experiment examines the impacts of the above perceived factors on the magnitude of pay and the salary-incentive mix of the compensation package. The results verified the hypothesis that larger values and a larger proportion of merit pay accompany increases in perceived agent effectiveness. However, no support was obtained for the hypothesis that compensation packages that are smaller in value and have a smaller proportion of performance-contingent pay result from rising perceptions of environmental uncertainty.

Staffing and allocation of workers in an administrative office
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze problems associated with the staffing and allocation of employees in an administrative setting based in the Southern District Office in Allegheny County, PA. A closed queuing network framework was utilized to address the allocation, staffing and equity concerns and to represent the work flow within an administrative office. Represented by a fixed set of cases and workstations, the network supported several assumptions related to service time distribution, accommodation of units and a queue discipline. Several performance measures were also considered in the study, including throughput rate, mean number of busy workers and utilization at each workstation, efficiency and equity.
