The missing link; Nextel is determined to succeed by standing apart from the crowd. Its strategy: Direct Connect
Article Abstract:
Nextel Communications is succeeding in the wirelesses communications industry due to the popularity of its Direct Connect service. Nextel was the first wireless company to implement its own national digital network, a system that covers approximately 63% of the US. That allows the company to charge by the second rather than the minute, and eliminates roaming charges for customers. Direct Connect is different from other wireless services in that it allows users to connect instantly with others users that are a part of their group. Users can talk one-on-one or conduct a conference call with up to 100 participants. Nextel had an instant market for its digital wireless phone with blue- and gray-collar workers. It is also expanding into the wire-collar market.
