Some statistics suggest that the Australian economy could return to the rapid growth seen in 1998 to 2000. However, there are also indications of deep-seated structural difficulties. This confused situation is likely to persist for some time. This will make it very hard to develop a successful portfolio investment strategy.

Doubts are expressed about a report from the Business Council of Australia entitled 'Avoiding Boom/Bust, Macroeconomic Reform in a Globalised Economy.' It is argued that marcoeconomic stability is a vital, not a sufficient, condition for long-term expansion.
