Time magazine's one-advertiser issues become an issue for debate
Article Abstract:
The first issue of Time magazine in 1999 will be a first in another way; it will be the first regularly scheduled issue supported entirely by one advertiser, Pfizer, Inc. The topic of the issue will be "The Future of Medicine." Competing newsmagazines say they are sure there are no improprieties involved, but it just gives the perception of an impropriety to the public. Pfizer is the third-largest pharmaceutical advertiser in the U.S. after Glaxo-Wellcome and Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Brill's discontent; a media maverick works to broaden a new magazine's mainstream appeal
Article Abstract:
The attorney who never practiced law, Steven Brill, has launched his third business that he will try to make more palatable for consumers. Even the media folks that Brill's Content is for and about, have trouble staying with the magazine's content. Launched in the summer of 1998, subsequent issues are getting a little less heavy-handed. The first cover story called 'Pressgate' was written by Brill and went on for 30 pages.

National Geographic angers its photographers
Article Abstract:
The National Geographic Society has moved some units into the for-profit realm and now want to limit photographers' earnings in the process. A new contract has the elite group of picture takers upset enough to hire a lawyer. One example is capping photographers' fees while allowing expanded use of their photos in international publications, on television and over the Internet.
