Newspapers tap ex-Coke guru Zyman
Article Abstract:
The Newspaper Association of America, the industry's main trade group, has hired Sergio Zyman to develop a new marketing strategy for the industry. The hiring of the former marketing czar of the Coca-Cola Co. is part of the trade group's pledge to spend $11.5 million over the next five years for advertising and marketing initiatives and readership research. The trade group recently concluded a celebrity-based ad campaign that began in September 1997 that was conducted in newspapers and on cable television across the country. The campaign was ended as the industry begins to reassess its goals.

Jones Apparel to acquire Nine West for stock, cash valued at $885 million
Article Abstract:
Jones Apparel Group Inc. announced that it will acquire Nine West shoe giant in a stock, cash, and debt assumption deal. For $885 million, Jones can add 1,500 shoe stores to its moderately-priced apparel and accessory business. Jones will put Mark J. Schwartz in as chairman of the shoe company. One of its founders, Vincent Camuto, will remain in an active roll. The shoe company's problem with alleged price-fixing is not seen as a significant enough reason not to go ahead with the acquisition.
