Tobacco industry
Article Abstract:
Potential investors in the tobacco industry need to be aware of the legal implications of two trials, one in California and another in Oregon, where the juries held against the industry and meted out large awards. The industry should be under pressure throughout 1999 as as result, even though US retail cigarette prices have increased by $0.70 per pack and RJR Nabisco is selling off its international tobacco business. These stocks are not timely in 1999 and have little to recommend them for the future.

Tobacco industry
Article Abstract:
The tobacco market in the US continued to deteriorate in 1999 with a 9% decline and shipments and the economic consequences of litigation against the industry in Florida and elsewhere. Acquisitions and mergers in the industry continue overseas, and this trend is expected to remain the case in the future. These stocks are not timely in 1999 and conservative investors should seek opportunities in other industries.
