Toddlers' tools without the ring of truth
Article Abstract:
Hasbro Interactive's $39.95 Tonka Workshop is a children's educational software game that teaches youngsters 3 and older how to use virtual tools and complete various projects. The keyboard peripheral and CD-ROM for Windows 95 and Windows 98 goes beyond traditional plastic toys by stressing creativity. An on-screen Drawing Board allows users to select assignments such as designing a sled. Tonka Joe, a CD-ROM character, reads instructions while players apply several keystrokes to accomplish each design step. The Storage Shed lets players select sculpture from wood, metal or stone. Tonka Workshop intentionally avoids the simulation of real-world tools, as well as any emphasis on crafstmanship and skill. This non-literal perspective is appropriate for young people who are learning how tools work.

Game gurus making a move to glory
Article Abstract:
A growing number of talented computer game programmers are organizing to establish the importance of authorship in digital media. Gathering of Developers (www.godgames.com) was founded by six developers who were responsible for a commercial hit. Each founder earned a seat on the board as well as an equity share in the company. Other such companies include 3D Realms, Edge of Reality and Ritual Entertainment. Computer game genres differ from book publishing or Hollywood because great programming transcends taste. Games reflect their designer's personality through their look and feel, ambiance and sense of craft. Other game publishers, however, have placed their names on the product without giving credit to the programmers.
