Top team deterioration as part of the downward spiral of large corporate bankruptcies
Article Abstract:
The characteristics of the top management teams (TMT) of 57 failed banks and an equal number of survivors were investigated. These team attributes under study were classified into two: team resources and team social structure. Team resources had five dimensions: team size, outside directors, functional expertise and team compensation. Team social structure was made up of average tenure, tenure heterogeneity and CEO dominance. Results of the study showed significant differences between failed banks and survivors on a number of TMT composition indicators, and that these gaps widened considerably over the failed banks' last five years of existence. These findings indicate that the deterioration of the top management team is major factor contributing to the collapse of business organizations.
