Trading in bonds on line at least; signals of revolution for a huge market
Article Abstract:
The bond market has come around slowly to online investors with the issuance last week of a Pennsylvania School District's first online sale. The switch to online trading has been slow because the bond market is structured differently than the stock market in that it does not have a central clearing house such as the NYSE and sales are conducted through a variety of networks. Initially individual investors will not see great deals in the market as they must pay higher transaction fees than they would for a similar transaction on the stock exchange through a discount online securities service.

Electronic middleman for mortgages; on-line service lets borrower initiate deal
Article Abstract:
The Tower Group calculates that in 2 years 10 percent of first mortgages, annually a $1 trillion market, will be transacted online. Services such as Priceline.com allow a user to put their terms out to bid to several lenders, by entering information into a form at a Web site and putting up a deposit with a credit card. Near term, first time borrowers will still prefer to get help from a mortgage broker. Online users must bring their own sense, whether from research or experience, that a loan offer is competitive.

Storing your life in a virtual desktop; Web-based storage and software reinvents an old idea, the network computer
Article Abstract:
Some Web sites are offering Internet users space on a hard drive to store files and calendaring and email services, so that these users could work from any Internet-connected PC. Some observers see services like this as revitalizing the network computer market. While the service may have appeal for travelling office workers, home users with slower Internet connections may be leery of storing their personal data remotely.
