Tupperware Corp. will add new selling techniques, at long last, to its party plan. Television ads will contain a phone number to call in an order; mall kiosks have begun to appear, and for U.S. customers, a Website for shopping. Catalog sales is also being considered. The company refuses to consider putting its products in stores. The company was founded in 1942 and has about 85,000 U.S. sales people. Net income for 1998 fell 39% to $69.1 million.These new options might give revenue the boost it needs.

Shaw Industries is planning to acquire Queen Carpet Corp. fpr $470 million

Dalton, GA-based Shaw Industries Inc. said it would be acquiring Dalton, GA-based Queen Carpet Corp. for $470 million in cash, stock and "other considerations". Shaw is also assuming $220 million of debt. The move cements Shaw's position as the world's largest carpet maker. According to Floor Focus, an industry publication Shaw controls 26% and Queen 8% of the US carpet market. The acquisition will give Shaw a manufacturing plant in California.

The chairman and CEO of Shaw Industries Inc., Robert E. Shaw, has been the dominant figure in the carpet industry. Mr. Shaw appears to be getting ready for Shaw's next chairman and CEO as he turned 67 years old on August 18, 1998.
