Air Hog and Zoob upstage Barbie in toy parade
Article Abstract:
Except for Furby, mass-market toys are not selling as well as certain specialty toys, especially if there is an educational aspect attached to the toy. Toys R Us won't say how sales are doing; Mattel says sales of Barbie are down from last year; K B toy store sales are also soft. Mass-market toys are usually quite simple and lose appeal quickly. Noodle Kidoodle, on the other hand, is having its "best year." Zany Brainy stores are pleased with sales, also. One mother claims her daughter isn't into toys anymore. Instead, the child wants a science gift that will allow her to "cultivate germs and other gross stuff." The educational toys sell without discounts. Check out Brio blocks, telescopes and talking globes for around $99 at Wooden Horse in Los Gatos, California.

Radio stations make waves on the Web
Article Abstract:
The radio has high hopes on the Internet as Broadcast.com had a spectacular initial public stock offering. The Dallas company's share price tripled on the first day of trading, achieving a market capitalization of more than $1 billion. This was despite no foreseeable profits and revenue of only $8.9 million in the 12 months ending March 31, 1998. Internet radio has plenty of obstacles. Internet advertising totaled $1 billion last year. Less than 1% went to Internet radio sites. Internet radio offers many options without as many commercials and yammering disk jockeys.
