U.S. Judge rules foreigners may donate 'soft money.'
Article Abstract:
A federal judge has ruled that US law does not forbid foreign nationals from making unregulated contributions to political parties. This decision, one issued by District Court Judge Paul Friedman, is part of a pretrial move in the case against Yah Lin "Charlie" Trie, who has been accused of illegally contributing money to the Democratic Party for the 1996 elections. Although Judge Friedman did not dismiss any charges against Mr. Trie, he acknowledged that the Justice Department incorrectly applied the statute in its argument that so-called 'soft money' donations cannot come from foreign nationals.
